The blood of San Gennaro, martyred in 305 AD, is said to liquefy three times a year (September 19, May's first Sunday, December 16) during ceremonies in Naples Cathedral. When it doesn’t liquefy, it’s seen as a bad omen, as history has shown with events like World War II and the 1980 Irpinia earthquake.
